Carnival starts in Barcelona on Thursday 7th February 2013, called also “Fat Thursday” (“Dijous Gras” in Catalan), with the arrival of the Carnival’s King. He comes to the city to proclaim, for seven days, his reign of debauchery and excess.
This year there will be over 30 local carnival parades in all areas of Barcelona throughout the carnival week also accompanied of many local and festive events which enhance the traditional Catalan dishes Carnival: egg sausage, cake, omelette, escudella, etc.
The festival will culminate on Sunday 10 with the traditional masquerade that this year will be held at the Paseo Picasso. The same day is called the “Carnestoltes Cavalcada del Rei” which will leave Santa Caterina market to cross the Born district.
Also you can visit the Sitges carnival (not far from Barcelona), which is famous for its flamboyant parades, a spectacle of color and fun. Definitely, one of the biggest and best carnivals in the world.
